My brother and I live on either side of the Earth right now. Rhode Island is exactly 12 hours behind Singapore, so we’re always playing catch up. Most of these recordings were made in the short 2 hour window we have before my brother has to go to sleep and I have to go to work.

In the diasporic no man’s land of this film, everything is obscured. The spoken words don’t line up with the printed text. The diegetic sound doesn’t describe the dialogue. Each element confuses another, and information about each place is withheld even when clarity is performed in the visual and linguistic vocabulary of the film. But if you’re willing to be patient, you might just be able to see the koel bird.
